Nobunaga the Fool is interesting in regards to anime in that instead of being based on a game, a novel, or a manga, it is based on a stage play. The series takes place on two sister planets called the Star of the West and the Star of the East. The story follows a young woman from the Star of the West named Jeanne Kaguya d'Arc. Jeanne is having visions of a "Savior-King" and with help.

Oda Nobunaga

The first son of Oda Nobuhide and thus, the next lord of Owari. His brash and carefree attitude caused his father and the clan's retainers to dislike him and nicknamed him 'the fool'. However, behind his chaotic nature, Nobunaga was a highly intelligent man with boundless ambition and great strength and courage to back it up.

• The Archer: He can take out enemies who have their own mecha while still on horseback—with a bow and arrow!
• Badass Boast:

• Bash Brothers: With Mitsuhide and Hideyoshi.
• Big Brother Instinct: He's clearly fond of Oichi.
• Big Brother Mentor: He plays this role with Nobukatsu, obviously, and in a way also with Jeanne.
• Bishounen: In stark contrast to most fictional versions of Oda Nobunaga.
• Blood Knight: His grin when he does battles is wide and vicious.
• Catchphrase: 'It was inevitable!' Reputedly the historical Nobunaga's final words.
• The Chosen One: Only the Star Savior is supposed to be able to pilot the mecha he easily takes over. Joan also has visions of him. According to Joan, he can prevent a calamity from befalling both stars.
• Expy: Of Takuto Tsunashi. Nobunaga's hair is basically a gray and black version of Takuto's Ginga Bishonen red and yellow hair style, neither are lacking in the 'flair' department, and they share the same voice actor
• Forgotten Childhood Friend: He met Himiko when they were children, but he doesn't seem to remember her.
• Historical Beauty Update: Somewhat justified in that this is not supposed to be the Nobunaga from history, and is heavily implied to be Oda's reincarnation.

• I Call It 'Vera': He names his mecha The Fool after himself.
• I Hate Past Me: Has had nightmares of the real life Nobunaga since he was a kid, and he has hated and feared that he could be such a person since.
• Idiot Hero: Subverted. It's obvious that Nobunaga is very shrewd. He quickly figures out how his friend figured out he was talking about a girl, and when he discovers an enemy raiding party he immediately reports it rather then charging in. However, he also does not care at all for social niceties, choosing to ditch his own brother's coming of age ceremony for hunting. Hence his nickname, 'The Fool'
• Improbable Aiming Skills: He manages to take our three mecha units using nothing but a bow and arrow by firing through the small openings in the heads that allow the pilots to see.
• Multicolored Hair: His hair is grey with a black 'star' in the middle.
• Know When to Fold 'Em: He chose to retreat after Caesar, who was also his father's killer, back-stabbed Shingen rather than stay to fight Caesar and Shingen's men.
• Psychic Dreams for Everyone: The beginning of episode one has him having a dream of his previous life's death. It also gave him a glimpse of Jeanne
• Red Eyes, Take Warning: A hint of his true cunning and prowess in battle.
• Reincarnation: Obviously.
• Tarot Motifs: As fitting with the rest of the show. His Tarot is 'The Fool', the quintessential adventurer at the beginning of his quest.

Jeanne Kaguya d'Arc/Mori Ranmaru

A young woman from the Western Planet who frequently dreamed of a woman being burned at stake and was ridiculed for it. When Leonardo da Vinci offered her a chance to find out what destiny has in store for her, Jeanne took a leap of faith and traveled with the genius inventor to Eastern Planet. There, she met Oda Nobunaga whom she reluctantly served under the guise of a man.

• All of the Other Reindeer: It's made pretty clear that her childhood was less then pleasant due to her visions.

• Barrier Maiden: The power of her Regalia takes the form of a banner that can be only used defensively, keeping with Joan of Arc's historical conduct on the battlefield.
• Bifauxnen: See Dragged into Drag below.
• Breast Plate: Her armor consists of a single pauldron on her left shoulder.
• But Not Too Foreign: Jeanne Kaguya D'Arc. Made especially ridiculous since the equivalent of Japan is on ANOTHER PLANET.
• Composite Character: Like with names up top say, she's Jeanne d'Arc (prophetic visions), Kaguya-hime (girl from space who lands in Japan), and Ranmaru (Nobunaga's follower and (probably) lover).
• Dragged into Drag: Nobunaga has her hide her real gender and call herself Ranmaru because he knows how suspicious suddenly being followed around by a buxom foreign woman would be.
• Gag Boobs: Hideyoshi is more than happy to ogle them.
  • Gainaxing: Amazing she can keep them contained while in disguise.
  • Suppressed Mammaries: She noticably complains about the pain of doing so.
• Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: The most innocent character in the cast.
• Historical Beauty Update: While the real Jeanne D'arc was indeed buxom, though probably not quite to Kaguya's extreme, she had short, black hair and wore male clothing, whereas Kaguya has long blonde hair, big blue eyes and skimpy clothes. Though she does wear male clothing later.
• I Just Want to Be Badass: She stars learning how to use a bow and also a sword. She even gets her own 'war armor'.
• Innocent Blue Eyes: although the people of her village would call them Occult Blue Eyes.
• Jeanne d'Archétype: Duh.
• Ms. Fanservice: In her Western garb. Not so much when disguised as a man.
• Nice Girl: Though she won't hesitate to punch you out for trying to grope her.
• Paper-Thin Disguise: The first time Himiko meets Jeanne, she immediately opens her shirt to confirm her suspicion. And Caesar just needs one look at her from afar to know she's a woman. Even Ichihime seems to know that she is female.
• Primal Fear: Of fire. Most likely caused by her connection to the actual Jeanne D'arc and possibly Mori Ranmaru.
• Psychic Dreams for Everyone: Just like Nobunaga, she was having dreams of her prior incarnation's death.
• Reincarnation: Duh, Again.
• Reluctant Fanservice Girl:
• The Rival: Himiko deems Jeanne as her rival.
• Undying Loyalty: She ends up developing this for Nobunaga, 'The Savior King'.
• Waif Prophet: Hears voices which predict what she needs to do next.

Akechi Mitsuhide

• Agent Peacock: His attire and mannerism are quite flamboyant.
• Bishōnen: Handsome and elegant, in comparison to his rougher companions.
• Character Tics: Hair flips.
• Guile Hero with a bit of Manipulative Bastard
• Heroic BSoD: After killing Nobukatsu, it takes Mitsuhide awhile to get over the fact he had to kill Nobukatsu to ensure that the clan would unite behind Nobunaga.
  • Suffers another on when Ichihime agrees to marry Caesar.
• Implied Love Interest: He appears to have feelings for Ichihime.
• Love Triangle: He has feelings for Ichihime, who is strongly hinted to return his affections. Meanwhile Caesar has fallen in love with Ichihime too.
• Shoot the Dog: Assassinates Nobukatsu so Nobunaga would be in power.
• The Spymaster: His primary task among Nobunaga's allies.
• Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He fits the trope in a subdued fashion.
• Undying Loyalty: To Nobunaga.

Totoyomi Hideyoshi/Son Goku

• All Men Are Perverts: He likes Jeanne's chest.
• Animal Motif: Monkey.
• An Arm and a Leg: Loses one of each in his battle against Alexander, which are replaced by cybernetics.
• Artificial Limbs: His left arm and leg.
• Blow You Away: After receiving the wind shinki from Nobunaga.
• Bunny-Ears Lawyer: His easy-going nature belies his true capabilities.
• Came Back Strong: After his near-death experience, he's rebuilt as a cyborg.
• Cynicism Catalyst: His dead little sister. Though in an odd version of this, while Hideyoshi does use her death as motivation, he doesn't use it in revenge against the people who indirectly caused her death: the Oda clan.
• Instant Expert: He almost immediately figures out how to expertly control Da Vinci's tank.
• No Sense of Personal Space: Asks Jeanne for a lock of hair, asks her if her boobs are really that big, and then tries to grope her.

Leonardo da Vinci

• Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Renowned genius? Yes. Wears a tuba like a scarf? Hell yes.

• Gadgeteer Genius: Much like the real Da Vinci, taken to extreme levels.
• Genre Savvy: He quickly figures out how to get onto Oda's good side.
• Large Ham: The largest of all!
• Megane: His glasses add to his quirky appeal.
• Trickster Mentor: Has shades of this.
• Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: He disobeys orders and risks his life in order to help Jeanne follow her prophecies.

Ichihime

• Arranged Marriage: To Caesar, so they can seal a truce between his side and the Oda Clan.
• Big Brother Worship: She adores her brother, and recognizes his hidden potential.
• Composite Character: Appears to be based on Oichi, Nobunaga's little sister, and Nouhime, his wife.
• Flower in Her Hair: She has several combs decorated with flowers.
• Implied Love Interest: She appears to return Mitsuhide's interest in her.
• Love Triangle: Both Mitsuhide and Caesar fall in love with her, and it appears she feels something for each of them in return.
• Naginatas Are Feminine: As appropriate for a warlord's daughter, she carries one while preparing to defend her clan.
• The Narrator: She serves as this on occasion.
• Princesses Prefer Pink: In contrast to the other, rougher heroines in the series.
• Rapunzel Hair: Nearly to her knees.
• Reincarnation: She was Oda's little sister in her past life and this one.
• Silk Hiding Steel: She seems gentle and kind, but she reveals an iron will and sharp political instincts when necessary.
• Together in Death: With Caesar.
• Undying Loyalty: To her older brother of course.
• Yamato Nadeshiko: To the core. She is a true daughter of a noble warlord, elegant and soft-spoken much of the time but revealing a keen insight and will of iron when necessary. She supports her clan without a second thought, accepting an Arranged Marriage by threatening to kill her betrothed if he crosses her clan. When the castle comes under siege, she prepares to defend the castle with Naginata in hands.

Oda Nobukatsu

• Big Brother Worship: He adores his brother and supports him wholeheartedly.
• Killed Off for Real: Assassinated by Mitsuhide in order to secure Nobunaga's leadership.
• Nice Guy: He's far too kind, and has no interest in ruling the Oda Clan.
• Non-Action Guy: And he knows it.
• Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. He turns out to be the kindest, most humble member of the Oda clan. It does not end well for him.
• Too Good for This Sinful Earth: His death in episode six signifies a turning point in the series.
• Undying Loyalty: He is loyal to his older brother.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: We don't see much of him before he's killed off.
• The Wise Prince: In contrast to his brother, he is modest and level-headed.

• Big Damn Heroes: To Nobunaga in episode three.
• Forgotten Childhood Friend: She and Nobunaga met when they were children, but he doesn't seem to remember her.
• Heroic Sacrifice: In episode six, she takes a bullet for Nobunaga. She survives, however.
• Older Than They Look: Despite looking almost prepubescent, he's 16, making her older than Jeanne.
• Purple Eyes: In line with her great skill with the Regalia.
• The Rival: She considers Jeanne to be her rival.
• Uncatty Resemblance: Has a pet that acts like an Expressive Accessory.
• Victorious Childhood Friend: She initiates a Batman Gambit in order to invoke this, tricking Nobunaga into becoming her betrothed. We have yet to see whether she'll ultimately be successful or not.

Takeda Shingen

• Blood Knight: As bad as Nobunaga. Maybe worse.
• Killed Off for Real: By Caesar.
• Large and in Charge: He's enormous, and the leader of his clan.
• Large Ham: He's loud and bold to the extreme, even moreso than Nobunaga.
• Playing with Fire: He wields the Fire regalia, in line with his bold personality.
• Worthy Opponent: Considers Kenshin and later Nobunaga to be this.

Uesegi Kenshin

• The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Though it was too late for Kenshin to play the trope straight, states that he was supposed to be the one to defeat Shingen, and is disappointed that Nobunaga beat him to it.

King Arthur

• Big Bad: The ruler of the Western Planet, with his sights set on conquering the East.
• Cool Sword: Well, of course.
• Creepy Cool Crosses: He's surrounded by Christian themes and imagery, and clearly not the hero he presents himself as.
• The Faceless: His face is obscured from view by an eerie light. He seems to be able to make himself appear as whatever his target wants to see, appearing as an Ambiguously Brown man to Alexander and a stunning beautiful woman to Caesar. Their reactions, weeping Tears of Joy and swearing undying loyalty, suggest this allows Arthur to influence them.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Appears to Caesar as a maiden with beautiful blue eyes and golden hair, while playing up the innocent image associated with them.
  • Purple Eyes: At least when viewed by Alexander.
• Gold and White Are Divine: He plays this up, surrounding himself with such imagery while claiming that he is the Savior King.
• Historical Villain Upgrade: Unlike the legendary Arthur, he's a tyrant that seems to gather psychotic followers.
• In the Hood: His robes include a hood, to help conceal his true appearance.
• Lie to the Beholder: His true form is a decrepit old man, but he shows a different face to each person he allows to see under his mask.
• Light Is Not Good: The only thing visible out of his hood is an extremely bright light.
• Orcus on His Throne: Bonus points for having an actual flying throne.
• Purple Is Powerful: His robes are the color of nobility, signifying his power.
• Vocal Dissonance: He has a very harmonic and soft voice for what can only be presumed to be the series's Evil Overlord.

Gaius Julius Caesar

• Arranged Marriage: He agrees to side with the Oda Clan, in exchange for Ichihime's hand in marriage. She accepts, threatening to kill him if he goes back on his word. He greatly admires this, and shows genuine efforts to earn her affection.
• BFG: After his 11th-Hour Superpower.

• Big Damn Heroes: Rescues everyone from Hannibal and Charlemagne, blasting away their ice-cloud and turning the tide of battle.
• Brainwashed and Crazy: After seeing King Arthur's 'face', which appears to him as a stunningly beautiful woman. This causes him to act as Arthur's agents, summoning Arthur's castle to the eastern planet and declaring his intentions to help Arthur bring about a new world. He even tries to destroy the Oda clan, before being freed by Nobu.
• Cool Mask: It covers half of his face. He tells Mitsu that it originally covered an injury from a duel, but he found women were so fascinated by it that he decided to keep it. It shatters when Nobu frees him from Arthur's mind control.
• 11th-Hour Superpower: Rare villainous example. When Nobunaga is about to defeat him in Episode 12 he manages in desperation to 'become a Dragon', overloading his mech on the quantum energy of the leylines.
• Et Tu, Brute?: Well, he is Caesar. The imps turn on him, killing him and Ichihime.
• Even Evil Has Standards: Unscrupulous as he is, he draws the line at killing women.
• Died in Your Arms Tonight: Dies in Ichihime's arms.
• Heel–Face Turn: After his Arranged Marriage with Ichihime, he mellows down and joins Nobunaga's cause.
  • Love Redeems: His affection for Ichihime brings him over to Nobu's side.
• Hypocrite: He called Nobunaga a coward for running away while he himself just stabbed a dying man in the back.
• Icy Blue Eyes: Signifying his cool, ruthless personality.
• Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: When the imp twins turn on him, running him and Ichihime through with a spear.
• Love at First Sight: He falls in love with Ichihime after seeing her through his periscope once.
• Love Freak: While brainwashed by King Arthur.
• Love Triangle: He is in love with Ichihime, but so is Mitsuhide.
• Pet the Dog: His interactions with his new bride reveal a more gentle side of him.
• The Power of Love: Declares it as a Badass Boast, when he arrives to rescue Nobunaga and the others.

• The Rival: Seems to have some sort of enmity with Alexander.
• Sharp-Dressed Man: He's quite dashing, in his uniform.

• White Hair, Black Heart: Zigzagged. He's extremely ruthless, but turns out to have his own code of morals and is genuinely kind to his bride-to-be.
• Wouldn't Hit a Girl: One of his personal code of morals.

Marcus Junius Brutus

• Number Two: To Caesar.
• Red Herring: Any knowledge of history or Shakespeare would foreshadow him later betraying Caesar, actually the Twin's kill Caesar and he doesn't show up much.

Nell and Bianchi

• Ax-Crazy: They thrive in causing destruction and suffering.
• Cute Is Evil: As adorable they are, they happen to be the most psychotic and sociopathic villains of the show.
• Sweet Tooth: Rarely seen without a bag of candies in their hands.
• Token Mini-Moe: The twins are the youngest characters in the show, and both are rare villainous examples.
• Who Wears Short Shorts?: Bianchi does.

Alexander

• Anti-Villain: Type II, of the Noble Demon variety.
  • Badass Normal: No Regalia to be spoken off.
• The Dreaded: His sheer power is able to make not just Kenshin, but even Nobunaga to hesitate.
• Drop the Hammer: Capable of reducing entire valleys to dust in a single blow.
• Person of Mass Destruction: To a completely absurd degree.

• Face Palm: When he watches Charlemange and Hannibal 'flirting with each other'.

Cesare Borgia

Charlemagne

• Affectionate Nickname: He is called 'Charles' by Hannibal.
• Famous Last Words: 'Je t'aime Hannibal'.
• Gratuitous French/Gratuitous English: Christ on a bike... Not only is it grammatically incorrect, but his Catchphrase manages to mess up two languages at once.

• Together in Death: Guess with who.
• Unholy Matrimony: With Hannibal.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: Killed in the same episode he was introduced.

Hannibal Barca

• Blade on a Stick: A spear is her weapon of choice.
• Gender Flip: Hannibal was a man, but here she's a woman.
